Travel plans for 2006: Going for Broke
I can’t go through an entire day at the office without visiting Kayak.com and Lonely Planet for ideas on where to go and whether I can afford it. Of course, I would love to accomplish all of these, but I’ll settle for just half the itinerary.
- Argentina or Peru in March
Karen is keen on practicing her Spanish in South America, and I like that my greenbacks go a long way down there. We also have a free ticket waiting to be cashed in, which makes it even cheaper. We had planned on Belize, but it’s rather expensive for that part of the world. Melody, the resident expert on Argentina, said it can be quite difficult traveling within the country. The finicky airline workers like to go on strike unannounced. In fact, she was stranded a week because of one of these unnanounced work stoppages. We only have 2 weeks to spend, so we’ll have to figure out the way from Buenos Aires to Patagonia. As for Peru, we hear great things. Beaches, warm weather, Machu Pichu, wildlife, jungles, amateur pilots… the works! But they have those Shining Path folks that’s making me put a bit more consideration before booking the tix.
- St. John, USVI
We had a blast last summer in Curacao with Tasha, Glen and Bettina–oh and of course Izzy–that we want to all go out on the road again. The only problem I had with Curacao was the prices. $25 meals are just a bit out of my price range. That and the Marriott. Ok, 2 problems. I loved the beaches and the luxe at a resort, but I’m not keen on going back to these resorts anytime soon. Maybe when karen and I are older or have kids. We basically paid $125/nite there. Shit. This year, we all decided to rent a condo for a week before the hurrricane season comes full effect. After laying on white sand beaches and snorkeling all day long, Tasha will have a home made dinner ready for all of us
- Montreal
Karen is planning on getting her drivers license sometime this year. Once that happens, we’ll load up the GTI and head north, blasting out French language cds while we rack up the 2000 miles or 1300 somethingKM to our newly conservative neighbors up north.
- Malaysia
It has never occurred to me to visit Malaysia until about 3 years ago when karen asked if I ever wanted to visit Malaysia. Umm… sure. Of course. Knowing nothing about it except for the cuisine and Michele Yeoh, Malaysia has been on my mind ever since. Singapore was the closest we ever got to it. We wanted to flee the NYC cold, and the Friday after Thanksgiving door busting sales, for warm tropical Malaysia back in November. karen, however, was worried about it the after effects from the Tsuanami. Then we met Simon in China who was in Malaysia a few months earlier. His glowing remarks about the country allayed any concerns we had.
- Boston
Huh? wha? beantown? Boston? The one in Massachusettes? Yes, that one. My beloved Mets are heading up there in June for an interleague series with the BoSox. I’m pretty sure I’m not the only Met fan thinking about Pedro taking the mound up there ,and salivating at the thought of him racking up double digits Ks. Oh baseball, too many more days til pitchers and catchers report to Spring Training…
- Sydney for New Years
I hear great things about being in Sydney at New Years Eve. Pritesh and Mira were telling us about how they had to book their hostel and flights about 6 months ahead just so they can be in Sydney for the celebration. I guess being the first time zone to be in the next year is a big deal to them Aussies. There is also something quite unique in being a year ahead of the rest of the world if only for just one hour. Nonetheless, we’re hoping to be there. That is, if we’re not moving yet again to another apartment.
India, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Tibet, China
Annika and Mark invited us to their wedding in Goa. Under normal circumstances, we’d have gone. Unfortunately, we only got the invite after we booked the flights to China. There’s just not enough in the savings account to pay for 2 $1600 tix to Goa. Just no way. I think they understand why we can’t make it. Annika and I were talking about backpacking through those areas. They want to backpack with us to those places. We want to see India and they want to see China. We all want to see Nepal, Tibet, and Sri Lanka. We’re all for roughing it. It’s like a match made in heaven.
