Indie rock and baseball goes hand in hand. There’s always Brewers banter at The Promise Ring shows. Yo La Tengo are openly proud Mets fans. And of course, the hipster softball games at McCarren Park. Now the Hold Steady does a rendition “Take Me Out to the Ballgame” with some props to their beloved Twins.

Word leaked yesterday that the Mets have sold naming rights for their new stadium to Citigroup. I’m not a big fan of naming rights, but I’ll learn to love it if the extra cash will allow my Mets to compete year in year out. However, I’ve been a Mets fan since 1983 so am well aware that good Mets teams don’t happen year in year out. Thus, a name like Citifield just opens itself to taunts from spankmee fans when the Mets aren’t doing well. Plus, imagine the pressure now for the architects if the stadium design is a dud.

I’m no Brooklyn historian and neither am I a baseball historian. While I may know some random obscure facts about both Brooklyn and baseball, it was only yesterday that I found out that the Dodgers was known earlier as the Trolley Dodgers. I know of the other nicknames like the Bridesgrooms, but Trolley Dodgers seem to make perfect sense with at the time when trolleys criss-crossed Brooklyn streets . Now that they’re in LA, the name Dodgers is undoubtedly inappropriate. Perhaps the LA Pornos? LA Blondes?

Oh Spring, how I miss you, Warm weather in the day, freezing in the night, nasal allergies, itchy eyes, daylight savings, baseball, and more baseball.

A couple of days after swearing off not to play in a fantasy league this year, Glen drops an email to me asking if I was interested in joining his league. I thought about it for 10 minutes, and decided that I’ll wait until next year to not play. I’m a baseball nut, and found myself thinking about Angels and Rangers triple-A players but had no idea what day of the week it was. The only hours that mattered were: 1:10, 7:10, 10pm, and 12midnite. A bit obsessive I know.
